It's Valentine's Day and we will be hopping the plane for Merida, State of Yucatan, Mexico on Sunday, 2/27. Terry and I have been busy preparing S/V Cool Change for our time away. Our biggest concern is that for the first time in our lives we will be leaving home on a walkabout and NOT being directly on the water...we will be 36 km. (30 minutes by bus) away from the port of Progreso.
Family and friends will be missed, but hey....come on down and visit!
The question we have been asked the most has related to safety. We have relied on objective research indicating that the State of Yucatan is the safest state in Mexico based on statistics. We do not intend to hang out in the hood, and neither of us are interested in entering the drug trade so I don't think we are a deliberate target for danger. And, we have to be realistic - we spend a lot of time on I-45 and in/around Houston. Nuff said!
We have rented a house in Merida Centro for the duration of our travels and will be using it as our home base. We are a short walk away from the first class/second class bus stops, and will also be relying on local buses for transportation.
First thing we'll do upon arrival - have a cerveza and toast la vida loca!
